The Somerville Divestment Project (SDP) is a grassroots
organization in Somerville, Massachusetts. Members of SDP
are everyday people: homemakers, students and
teachers; retirees and people juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet.
We are a grassroots organization in Somerville that focuses on
building a solid base of support for the human rights and self
determination of the Palestinian people.
Palestinians have been subject to a system of
extreme discrimination and human rights abuses including the forced dislocation in
1948.
The mistreatment of Palestinians has been directly funded by our own government, and
it is that which calls us to act as citizens and residents of the US. Our own city
Somerville has money invested in Israel Bonds as well as military companies
benefitting off of the atacks on Palestinians. We believe that Somerville should
divest these holdings.
SDP is currently working in solidarity with two organizations -
Cambridge Residents for Human Rights (CRHR)
and
Jamaica Plain Residents for Human Rights (JPRHR). These grassroots organizations host
monthly public screenings of films dealing with Palestinian human rights, followed by Q &
A and discussion. CRHR and JPRHR are considering ballot question campaigns for the 2008
election.
SDP is a member of the Wheels of Justice Network
(WOJN) which is sponsoring a
semi-annual Wheels of Justice tour through the Southwest and Rocky Mountain area this fall
and is launching an "Outsourcing Palestine" campaign to assist Palestinian entrepreneurs
to advertise their technical services skills products internationally and thus to escape
the economic stranglehold of the Israeli occupation. SDP also expects to campaign for one
or more ballot questions in 2008.
We hope you will join us as we build citizens' power (and residents' power) for change.
